Our look book shoot with the fantastic Studio E Photography!!!

Some behind the scene shots and creation pictures for our September 2015 fall runway show at Western Canada Fashion Week “Fantasy Night.” Our look book was shot with Studio E Photography and he provided top-notch high quality shots, with Ashley Skrocki doing hair and makeup and Tanner and myself directing the models to get some really great shots that captured the pieces. Studio E provided some great direction, taught us tons about how to do a runway show, offered advice on future shows and provided lots of assurance in case things went wrong or models cancelled/didn’t show up at the last minute.

We were lucky enough to find two really amazing and accommodating models that were willing to work until around 3:30 am each night!!! We had so many items that the look book took two different nights to actually photograph. Our first model on Thursday was Carra Pischke and on Friday was Pauline Yee.

Ashley being the perfect assistant arranging the pieces Carra wore. Ernest off to the side probably asking not to have his photo taken!

Our top 12 favourite new wooden earrings and other new items for summer!

We hope you are having a great summer so far and you were able to spend Canada Day or Independence Day with your friends and family!

Part of our summer tradition is doing the St. Albert Farmers’ market. This market is one of the largest farmers’ markets in all of Western Canada and has numerous well-known artists, artisans and crafters mixed in with all the typical items you find at a farmers’ market. It regularly attracts crowds of 15,000-20,000 each Saturday. We are doing most of the dates in July, August and October, but we are skipping September due to some larger shows we have booked in (click here to see our upcoming September shows) Our booth number changes around since we did not sign up as a full time vendor. I will try to post where we will be at the market each time, If I don’t we are one of the few blue topped tents!

We have been participating in the St. Albert Farmer’s market since we started selling 7 years ago. Some customers have been buying or stopping at our booth in St. Albert since we first set up there with a large patio umbrella. We quickly bought a tent after it took both of us to keep the umbrella from tipping over!

Our booth at the Market with some of our custom built display stands. I will be writing a blog on how we made these from an assortment of used or almost free items.

On the left side of the booth is one of the display stands we built for our new line of lightweight colourful wooden earrings. Some of you may have seen our leather earrings at the booth or online. We now make a new collection of earrings, and pendants, in Baltic birch. These earrings are large and lightweight and only $25 CDN for a pair. Each design can be custom made in any of the other colours you see online.

I started making some of these in leather but the dying process was so time consuming that I couldn’t keep them at the $25 price point. The great thing about the wooden pieces is that with most of them you can see the wood grain right under the colour that, in my opinion, adds an extra dimension to the piece.

Also as part of our wooden earrings collection, do to popular demand, we started creating fandom favorites for the comic expos we do and have carried the designs forward into our other shows as well! These will now also be made available on our website. We will be adding some new fandom pieces for the Edmonton Expo coming up in September. Shows like Dr. Who have kept me company in the studio for a while now! I like to use the episodes as a guide to tell me how long I’ve been working and to keep track of how long each item takes. The next time someone asks how long it took to make one of our masks I will answer “16 episodes of Dr. Who!”

Our top 12 favourite new wooden earrings for summer!

From our classic dragon and quatrefoil designs, to our fandom favourites, to all the new designs Amy has developed in preparation for this seasons markets we are excited about this collection! Of course it was hard to choose from the large variety of new wooden designs and we couldnt commit to just a top 10 but we narrowed it down to our top 12.

We finally made some of the most requested items at the booth; wallets. Below are a couple of our bi and single fold wallets. We have several others in stock right now including a skull and scarab. We plan to add one or two each week to our inventory so there will be a large selection in no time! We are selling them at the market and other shows and will be putting them online in the near future. If you have any questions or would like to purchase one please email us and we will add one to the store.

We have been working steadily on custom orders we have received over the last couple of months and really enjoy creating new ideas that come from you. Pictured below is a set of custom bracers we made for a customer.

This custom order is one of the most asked about. We’ve had several emails and people stopping by the booth telling us how beautiful this book is. This travellers or Midori style journal actually holds several inserts that can be changed out easily depending on what you want to carry with you. We are working on some printable inserts including: day planners, to-do lists, field drawings, notes, etc. We will make these inserts available for free on our blog. I’ve finished one for Tanner and we are working on a video to show you how great this style of book is.

Another back in stock item is the “Tree of Life” journal! It’s not listed on our store yet since we are also selling it in person. If you have any questions please feel free to email us! This is one of our most popular leather journals, it’s hand carved, tooled, hand dyed with 4 layers of green dye, sealed, hand painted with gold leather paint. Then we fold, mark and hand bind all the pages for the journal. Because the pages are hand bound they can easily be replaced after you fill the journal. This journal is made from quality North American tooling leather and features acid free card stock pages which are great for: writing and drawing on (in pen or pencil), as well as, displaying photographs or keepsakes.

Lastly, we are working on another fan favorite that has been out of stock most of the year: our hand carved Dragon leather journals! We will bring them out to the markets and have them online as soon as they are ready.

The item of the month is our small-antiqued leather journals! With this item of the month it includes, along with one of designs, an etching of your initials for free! To order the customized journal just send us an email with what you would like (which design) and type in the comments section your first, middle and last initial! Your initials will then be placed along the bottom of the inside flap.

Click here to view all the leather journals.

Note: Most of the wooden earrings are not in stock and are made to order. This requires several days to be made before sending them out.

Free shipping code until June 2.

We have several announcements for this newsletter we would like to share with you.

First we would like to share a new show for us near our hometown of Edmonton Alberta. It’s this weekend (May 30-31) in St. Albert and called the Eek Fest! It’s a comic and pop culture show that is quite a bit smaller than the Calgary Comic Expo, but it has some really unique events (board game competitions etc).

Our second big announcement is that we are offering free shipping with the code “freeship” to anywhere in Canada and the continental United States until June 2. We are offering this because we finally finished our new website, added tons of new items and we think it looks pretty awesome! After this code expires we will be making coupon available if you sign up to our newsletter. Our item of the month, the red dragon shield pendant, (of June) also includes a free 18” cord so you can wear your new pendant immediately. Every month we are going to have an item of the month which includes something with purchase.

Click here to check out our dragon shield pendant.

Shop for other dragon items.  To see more of our dragon blog click here.

Our third announcement for this newsletter is that we are now accepting custom orders on select items (this is exempt of the free shipping offer). We started accepting custom orders this month and already have a handful of really unique items we are working on and have completed. Some of the items we will be accepting as custom are books, book covers, midori or traveller’s journals for size 11 x 8.5 paper, bracers, wallets, card cases, book marks, guitar straps, corset belts, wood earring designs and some metal work depending on the image wanted.

Below is a book cover, created by us, for one of the largest “Lord of the Rings” volumes we have ever seen! For this book cover the client wanted this to be a life long keepsake for her son whom was graduating from university.  We were both really touched and grateful for the thanks we received from the client and her son.

Her son wrote us and said “just thought I'd let you guys know that you killed it with this! I love your other work (I've bought a journal for my girlfriend before), but I have to say that this has got to be one of your coolest pieces. I'm very proud to say that it is mine. Thank you so much for your effort on it.”

In a separate email the client sent us “though I don't have any pictures because I was watching my son's face as he opened his book you should know that the book was everything he wanted.  He was so pleased, he just kept looking at it, although he was a little embarrassed of the "Precious" quote from me he did say that some day he would probably read that and cry (which I took for a good sign).  Thank you for this special memory in our lives.”

For this custom book cover we wanted to make a cover that had an adventurer’s feel or ancient tome feel. We layered several coats of dye, with the final coat being a reddish-brown colour to bring out any marbling in the leather. The red dragon copper shield that sits over the closure was custom coloured to highlight the red in the leather. The whole book cover and straps were made from vegetable tanned leather and hand sewn with a saddle stitched together.

We included a free bookmark, made from the scrap leather left over from doing the interior flaps, with the same dragon that is on the copper shield. The quote and initials are what the customer requested and we used up any dye we had left over for the project!

Do you want a custom leather order? Please contact us here.

Our last announcement is; we are working on remaking some of the guitar straps and making a series of scarf pulls. We know that if you wear scarves throughout the year it is difficult to keep them in place and wear a pendant that is noticeable with it. This item is really a two in one item that keeps the scarf from moving and acts like a pendant. Plus it looks amazing and adds a pop of colour to solid coloured scarfs and adds an elegance touch with the metal work to multicoloured scarves.

We are working on more and of course may have others available at shows. If you to know what we are making or have in stock please contact us and we will get back to you or if you want to know what we will have for scarf ties at a upcoming show please comment or email us and we will try to post what is in stock.

Our guitar straps are featured on our new website please feel free to have a look if you are interested!

A quick note on our guitar straps is that we make them so they are adjustable. That way one size fits most. If you have any questions please contact us about shortest or longest size that it can be extended to.

For those of you in or near Edmonton we will be returning for select dates at the St. Albert Farmer’s Market. We will keep you posted of the dates and any other small shows we are doing.

This is a great Farmer’s market and one of the biggest ones in Western Canada. It also has a large amount of artisans and artists at the market. It’s one of our favourites to do out of all the markets we have done because a) we sort of live close by and b) it draws A LOT of people and tourists from all over the world.

I will be announcing the winner of the small journal on Facebook on May 4th!

Hello everyone! I will be announcing the winner of the small journal on Facebook on May 4th! To enter all you had to do is sign up for the newsletter, open the email and you are entered!

We are doing the Edmonton Tattoo and Arts Festival this weekend (May 1-3) and we have a couple free tickets left to anyone that wants them! Just email or Facebook us saying you want the tickets and they are yours. This is a new show for us and although we don’t really have any tattoos we really appreciate the art and skill that goes into them. Some of Canada’s top tattoo artists will be there to show and sell their work even on canvases and prints. Along with these artists there are many of the more edgy artists and artisans you may have seen around Canada that will be selling and showing their new work.

There are a couple new items that we will try to put on our store in May after the show.

Featured below is a Tree of Life tote with Celtic knot work on the back. This custom dyed tote is hand stitched, engraved, dyed and painted with a custom blend of colour to achieve the beautiful red toned brown.

I also did a matching Tree of Life wristlet/clutch for those that like to travel light.

Since it is spring our feature mask for this post is our Green Man mask (which symbolizes the growth and rebirth of spring). We had seen numerous Green Men throughout Scotland one of the more famous ones being from Rosslyn Chapel. We based this mask on several of the men we encountered while travelling and we will be posting a blog with some of the pictures in the near future. Some of you may have noticed there are not too many masks listed on our store or website. It's because they often sell within the first couple hours or days of a show so we either A) don't remake them and take a picture or B) take a quick shot with our cell phones for reference only. However we intend to have more online soon for you to check out.

Another item that goes really well with this collection is our Tree of Life Shield pendant n pure copper.

Other tree of life items can be viewed here.

handmade tree of life shield pendant

Our next item we are giving away will be a small leather mask sometime in late September in time for Halloween. One of our questions we always get at the booth is: what can you do with a mask? Well, to those that are collectors of historical (tribal masks, warrior masks, theatrical masks) and artists made masks (from Venice, Cirque Du Soleil, local artists etc) we know that the first thing that comes to mind is to display them as 3d pieces of art! Other uses include performers (actors & actresses, street performers, dancers, stilt walkers etc), costumes (comic cons, cos play, Halloween, masquerades etc) and festivals (burning man, Shambhala, Mardi Gras etc). With a list like that there is really no place you can’t wear a mask… well maybe not to a bank.

Some of our other leather masks can be viewed here

Thank you for your interest in our work and signing up for our newsletter. We are looking forward to continue to share all our new items with you!

Amy & Tanner Skrocki

P.S. Thank you again to all of those that came to see us at the Calgary Comic Expo. We had a awesome time seeing you all again! Our other shows can be viewed here.

Our entry for Western Canada Fashion Week March 2015

Italian leather books and the photos that inspired them.

As some of you already know many of our images are based on photographs we take on our travels. Here are some of the latest items with the original photos! Both photographs were taken in Denmark. The stylized Viking animal and rune stone alphabet was featured in a previous post that contained custom bookmarks.

Can you guess which one we were influence by?
Leather bound journal

Italian antiqued leather with stone carved woman on the front. Available in our store.
This is also available in the small size.
Leather bound journal
The pages are environmentally friendly wheat straw paper!
Another book from an image we took at the same place as the stone carved woman's face and head dress of a stone lion head.
Do you want a small stone lion book to be made for you? Please contact us here.
Aviking rune Leather bound journal
The book decorated with the runic alphabet! There is a matching book mark in the post below. This item is for sale in our store!
We also have it available in a small size Viking and rune Leather bound journal

The original photo.
The second book is based on a carved face of a woman from one of the most important renaissance castles in Northern Europe; the Kronborg castle in the town of Helsingor, Denmark. Apparently it is known as the castle from Shakespeare's play "Hamlet." We are both fans of Shakespeare and had to make a stop at this awesome castle to see what "Elsinore" was based on. There were many other really unusual carvings that we have turned into different projects based on this location alone and we will feature them in upcoming posts. Including many of our pieces that have wings!
This gorgeous vintage style distressed leather is never the same twice and has that "Restoration Hardware" feel to it.  We designed these books to have that traveler's journal feel that will hopefully inspire you to roll up this book and take it with you no matter where you go.
